Overview
The Winter Rock & Ice Climbing Course suits climbers who aim to build solid technical skills on natural rock and frozen winter ice. This training takes place in two of Nepal’s best practice environments: the warm crags of Bimal Nagar and the frozen ice walls of Humde in Manang.
The course begins in Kathmandu with an orientation, equipment check, and safety briefing. Participants then travel to Bimal Nagar (1,600 m) where they spend several days mastering rock climbing fundamentals, footwork, rope techniques, knots, belaying, rappelling, anchor building, and basic lead climbing strategies.
After solidifying rock skills, the journey continues to Jagat and onward to Humde (2,500 m), where participants transition to winter ice climbing. Training here includes ice axe placement, crampon techniques, vertical ice movement, mixed climbing, ice screw placements, anchor building, and multi-pitch fundamentals. The final sessions simulate real alpine climbing conditions to prepare climbers for future high-altitude ascents.
This course blends theory, practice, and real climbing environments, ensuring you gain the confidence and technical foundation needed for more challenging Himalayan expeditions.
Itinerary
Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport, where our team greets you warmly and takes you to your hotel. The rest of the day is free to relax, adjust to the city’s atmosphere, and enjoy your first evening in Nepal. A short briefing sets the tone for the training adventure ahead.
Today focuses on preparation and organization. You will meet your instructors, review the course outline, and complete a detailed gear check to ensure everything matches winter climbing standards. The team also conducts an orientation session covering safety practices, weather expectations, and technical equipment use, ensuring you’re fully ready for the upcoming field training.
After breakfast, drive along scenic mid-hill roads to Bimal Nagar. Upon arrival, settle into the lodge, have lunch, and head to the nearby rock climbing site. The afternoon includes warm-up climbs, movement basics, and introductory rope handling sessions, allowing you to get comfortable with outdoor rock surfaces.
Spend a full day on the cliffs developing key rock-climbing skills. Instructors teach techniques such as foot placement, handholds, lead climbing basics, rappelling, and belaying. Practical exercises build confidence on vertical terrain. The natural rock walls provide the perfect outdoor classroom for testing balance, strength, and body positioning under expert supervision.
Begin the morning with final rock-climbing practice, focusing on movement efficiency and lead-climb progression. After lunch, drive toward Jagat, following winding roads through lush river valleys. Upon arrival, settle into the guesthouse, review the next phase of training, and prepare for the transition from rock climbing to winter and ice-climbing environments.
Travel toward Humde, entering the high-altitude landscape of the Manang region. The journey blends short drives with light trekking, allowing acclimatization as you gain elevation. Upon reaching Humde, settle in, explore the village, and meet the ice-climbing team. Evening preparation focuses on adjusting gear for cold environments and discussing glacier safety essentials.
Begin ice-climbing training on local frozen walls and snow slopes around Humde. Instructors teach crampon techniques, ice-axe handling, anchor placements, and movement on steep ice. You’ll practice ascending, front-pointing, and basic ice protection methods. The session helps you understand how to navigate winter terrain safely and efficiently.
Continue developing technical skills with more advanced ice-climbing exercises. Training includes vertical ice movement, multi-pitch systems, belay transitions, and rescue fundamentals. The day focuses on combining strength, control, and precision. Instructors also guide you through real-scenario practice to build confidence for alpine-style climbing conditions.
Your final day on the ice includes a full practical session simulating true alpine conditions. You’ll practice route planning, climbing in teams, protecting steep ice, and descending safely. This final training round reinforces all key techniques learned throughout the week, ensuring you’re confident in winter climbing fundamentals.
Drive back to Kathmandu, enjoying mountain scenery along the way. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and unwind after days of intense training. In the evening, the team conducts a debriefing session to review your progress, highlight strengths, and discuss future mountaineering paths.
Mark the end of your Winter Rock & Ice Climbing Course with a formal certificate awarding ceremony. Spend the day relaxing, exploring Kathmandu, or shopping for climbing gear. The team hosts a farewell gathering to honor your achievements and share memorable moments from the training journey.
After breakfast, our team transfers you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your flight home. Depart Nepal with new skills, lasting memories, and the confidence to continue your mountaineering journey. Farewell and thank you for joining the winter training expedition.
